The Major League Baseball team Baltimore Orioles are based out of Baltimore, Maryland and play in the American League's Eastern Division. The Orioles are one of the eight charter franchises for the American League and were established in 1901. Their first year the team was the Milwaukee Brewers, playing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Then they became the St. Louis Browns and played in St. Louis for 52 years before moving in 1954 to Baltimore where they became the Baltimore Orioles, named after Maryland's official state bird. Other nicknames for Baltimore include the Birds and O's. The Baltimore Orioles are well known for Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Their highly successful stadium open in 1992 and is located near where Babe Ruth was born.

The greatest success for the Orioles occurred from 1964-1983. The club won seven Divisional Championships, six pennants and three World Series titles (1966, 1970 as well as 1983). Five Orioles players also won the MVP award: Brooks Robinson (1964); Frank Robinson (1966); Boog Powell (1970); Cal Ripken, Jr. (1983, 1991). Hall of Famers Jim Palmer, Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson led the Orioles to their first World Series title in 1966. The 1970 World Championship team was also led by their three Hall of Famers in addition to Earl Weaver, their Hall-of-Fame manager, and Boog Powell, the American League 1970 MVP. Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken, Jr. led the 1983 World Championship team. The Baltimore Orioles have not had a winning record since Cal Ripken Jr. retired in 2001.
