The Major League Baseball club Boston Red Sox play in the Eastern Division of the American League. The team is one of the eight charter franchises for the American League and was founded in 1901. Fenway Park has been the home ballpark of the Red Sox since 1912.

Boston dominated the American League in their formative years. In 1903, they won the first ever World Series when they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates. By 1918 they had won another four championships. However, after that Boston went into one of baseball history's longest championship droughts ever. It was often referred to as “Curse of the Bambino.” In 1918, the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to their rival the New York Yankees. The Red Sox did not win another championship for 86 years until they finally broke through in 2004.

The team's history over that time period, however, was not one of futility. They participated in some of the World Series most memorable moments, including the mad dash of Enos Slaughter's in 1946, the 1967 “Impossible Dream,” the home run by Carlton Fisk in 1975, and the error by Bill Buckner in 1986. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have one of the most historic and fiercest rivalries in all of professional sports. The Red Sox since 2003 have been consistent playoff contenders. They have also won the World Series twice and emerged as one of last decade's most successful Major League Baseball teams.

Boston is also one of the leading MLB teams for average road attendance on a consistent basis, although Fenway Park's small capacity keeps them out of the running for leading the league in overall attendance. Since May 15, 2003 every Red Sox home game has sold out, which is an MLB record spanning nearly eight years.
