The Major League Baseball club Chicago White Sox play in the Central Division of the American League. The White Sox since 1991 have played their home games at U.S. Cellular Field, originally named New Comiskey Park. Local fans have nicknamed it The Cell. The last time the White Sox won a World Series title was in 2005. They swept the Houston Astros in four games.

The Chicago White Sox were one of the eight charter franchises for the American League. The team was founded in 1900. Originally the team went by the name White Stockings, however it became shortened to White Sox. In 1910, they moved to historic Comiskey Park where they would play for over eight decades.

During the franchise's first two decades they wee a very strong team. In 1906 they won the World Series behind their defense-oriented team nicknamed “the Hitless Wonders.” They also won the World Championship in 1917 led by Shoeless Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins and Eddie Cicotte. However, the Black Sox Scandal tainted the World Series of 1919. Several prominent White Sox players (including Jackson and Cicotte) were accused of purposefully losing games and conspiring with gamblers. The tainted players were banned for life out of Major League Baseball by Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the new commissioner.

This was followed by decades of mediocrity until the 1950s. However the New York Yankees dynasty continually blocked the perennially competitive White Sox teams out of the playoffs, except for the 1959 team which won the pennant led by manager Al Lopez and players Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox and Early Wynn. The White Sox didn't win another pennant until 2005 when the team won the first World Series title for the team in 88 years to break their drought just one year after Boston broke their more celebrated but slightly shorter curse.
