Miami Marlins manager, Ozzie Guillen, whose mouth is constantly getting him in trouble, has deleted his Twitter account.

“I hate Twitter,” said Guillen, disappointing his 230,936 followers to his account @OzzieGuillen.

Guillen posted his last tweet on Thursday, saying, “my last tweet. me ultimo tweet good luck buena suerte.”

According to the often-controversial manager, he no longer wants to deal with people who use the social media site to post disparaging comments about him. He declined to say whether or not a single incident precipitated his action.

“People out there are nasty, nasty. I don’t need that. I don’t need the aggravation. So many nasty people. They don’t have nothing better to do,” Guillen said. “I’m not Kim Kardashian. I don’t sell anything in my life to have Twitter.”

Since serving a five-game suspension in April for controversial comments he made about Fidel Castro, Guillen has tried to stay out of the spotlight. He just began posting tweets again about a week ago.

In 2011, Guillen was suspended for two games for posting tweets from the clubhouse after he was ejected from a game against the New York Yankees.

If he had tweeted about Thursday’s game, though, he wouldn’t have had many positive tweets to post as Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy tossed a five-hitter against the Marlins on his way to a 7-0 victory.

Cubs right-handed pitcher Kerry Wood plans to retire from baseball after he pitches a final game for Chicago.

Wood, who is 34 years old, dressed for the Cubs’ inter-league game against the Chicago White Sox on Friday and Cubs manager Dale Sveum indicated that Wood was available for a relief appearance if necessary.

The Cubs organization did not address Wood’s retirement; however, pitcher Ryan Dempster discussed the impact Wood’s retirement would have on the team.

“It will be tough not seeing him out there pitching,” said Dempster. “I hope he goes out there and finishes on a great note. He’s been a great friend and a great teammate and a great Chicago Cub.”

Before this year, Wood’s record was 86-73 with an ERA of 3.64 ERA, but he has struggled so far this season, going 0-2 with an ERA of 8.64. He went on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue earlier in the season and after he had a difficult outing against the Atlanta Braves, he threw his glove and hat into the stands.

In just over 13 seasons in the big leagues, Wood has been on the disabled list 16 times.

Wood left the Cubs as a free agent in 2008 to sign with the Cleveland Indians on a two-year, $20.5 million deal. The Indians traded him to the New York Yankees in 2010 and was Mariano Rivera’s set-up man.

In 2011, Wood returned to the Cubs and went 3-5 with an ERA of 3.35 in 55 relief appearances. His season ended when he tore a ligament in his left knee that needed surgery. He resigned with the Cubs in January 2012 for $3 million with a club option for 2013 worth another $3 million.

Wood was the number 1 pick of the Cubs in the 1995 amateur draft and was just 20 years old when he turned in one of the best pitching performances in history. He blanked the Houston Astros 2-0 and allowed just one hit in just his fifth major league start.

He also struck out 20 batters – a National League record - using his 100 mph fastball and dominating slider to keep Astros hitters off kilter. He tied Roger Clemens for the most strikeouts in a nine-inning game in Major League Baseball history.

“I didn’t know how many strikeouts I had. I knew I had already given up a hit in the third inning,” said Wood at the time. “I was just trying to get my first complete game. I’ll never forget it It’s a great moment in my life and my career.”

He was a major factor in the Cubs reaching the NLCS in 2003. He pitched in Game 7 but was the losing pitcher even though he hit a home run against the Florida Marlins.

Tampa Bay infielder Will Rhymes fainted on the field after getting hit on the right forearm by a 95-mph pitch from Boston Red Sox pitcher Franklin Morales.

“It literally hit me as hard on the bone, pretty much, as you can be hit. I was like, ‘That’s broken,’” said Rhymes. “I’m shocked (X-rays were negative).”

Rhymes will likely miss a couple of games as the bruise on his forearm heals, but it could have been much worse, for which Rhymes feels fortunate.

“Extremely lucky,” he said.

When he went down to first base after getting hit, Rhymes thought he was okay at first. However, he suddenly did not feel well and started to walk toward the dugout. He then fainted and fell to the ground. The Rays said he passed out from the adrenaline rush that hit him from the injury.

When asked about the incident following the game, Rhymes said he felt dizzy and nauseous as he trotted down to first base.

“You saw the rest. Apparently, I didn’t get real far,” said Rhymes. “My lights went out.”

Rhymes was revived fairly quickly but was taken off the field on a cart.

The injury to Rhymes is just the most recent one to befall Rays players this year.

“It’s pouring right now,” said Rays manager Joe Maddon. “But our guys, we’ve got the umbrellas up. We’re doing OK.”

The Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 11-7 on Wednesday at Comerica Park. However, that was the only good news to come out of the game.

Catcher and leading run producer Ryan Doumit was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained calf and right-handed pitcher Nick Blackburn left the game after only two innings with a thigh injury that he did not initially report to the trainer.

Outfielder Ben Revere was called up from Triple-A Rochester to take Doumit’s place on the roster.

In the game, Blackburn gave up six runs and his ERA increased to 8.37 before he realized that the pain he was feeling in his quad was causing him to leave pitches high in the strike zone. He only pitched 53 pitches in two innings of work.

Apparently, Blackburn first felt the pain in his quad during his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays, which was a game he won, giving him a victory for the first time since July 2011. Blackburn said he did not feel any pain between starts and was fine until he was warming up in the bullpen.

“As it went on, I wished he would have said something,” said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. “When he came out of the game, he said it felt like he had a knife sticking in his leg every time he landed on it. We’ll ad-lib and see. I wished he would have told us before that.”

Blackburn said that he did not want to force a relief pitcher into a start and believed he would be able to work through the pain.

“I try to tell myself, ‘rip your quad in half, do whatever it takes.’ To me it feels like I’m physically incapable of doing that,” said Blackburn.

Right-handed pitcher Vance Worley was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday with inflammation in his elbow.

Worley is scheduled for an MRI after which manager Charlie Manual said the club would know better what its dealing with.

“It seems like all of a sudden we lose guys for starts,” said Manual, whose Phillies have been decimated by injuries. “That doesn’t help, neither. We need our guys to make all the starts if possible. That’s kind of how it goes and you’ve got to deal with it.”

In seven starts so far this season, Worley has gone 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA. On Friday, he struck out nine San Diego Padres batters over six innings in a 7-3 win.

Worley’s next start was scheduled for Wednesday at Chicago against the Cubs, but Kyle Kendrick got the start instead. Worley’s stint on the DL will be retroactive to May 12.

In addition to Worley’s injury, the Phillies have seen Jim Thome go down because of back problems, left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee go down because of a strained left oblique and neither slugger Ryan Howard or Chase Utley have even stepped on the field yet this season.

To replace Worley on the roster, left-handed reliever Joe Savery was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Savery has pitched in eight games with the Phillies so far this season but has no record.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was given a four-game suspension by Major League Baseball for an altercation with an umpire during a game on Tuesday night. He was also fined an unspecified amount of money.

During the ninth inning of a game between the Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays, Lawrie was at the plate with a 3-1 count. When the next pitch was thrown, Lawrie thought it was ball four and started up the line to first base. Umpire Bill Miller, who was calling the balls and strikes behind the plate, called the pitch a strike.

Lawrie returned to the batter’s box and the 3-2 pitch was delivered. Lawrie again believed it was ball four and he started down to first base. Miller, though, called the pitch strike three and punched Lawrie out. Lawrie dropped to a crouch for a minute and then threw his bat. He shouted and gestured at Miller and was ejected from the game.

After the ejection, Lawrie started walking toward Miller and threw his helmet down. The helmet bounced off the ground and hit the umpire.

Following the suspension, Lawrie expressed his regret that the helmet hit Miller.

“The only thing I would change is maybe not throwing the helmet or any equipment toward the umpire because you can get an unlucky hop and have the kind of mess that’s going on right now,” said Lawrie.

Blue Jays manager John Farrell and general manager Alex Anthopoulos indicated they would not do anything to reign in the feisty 22-year-old player.

“He’s an energetic player, we don’t want him to lose that energy and that passion for the game, that will to compete and do whatever he has in his power at the moment to make an impact on the game,” said Farrell.

Lawrie said that he intends to apologize to Miller, although he has also appealed the suspension and will have a hearing next week.

“I’m just playing the game the way I’ve always played it,” said Lawrie. “That’s the passion I have for the game and I don’t feel like I need to change anything.”

When the hearing occurs, Lawrie will get a chance to tell his side of the story.

“The only thing I regret is the helmet hitting him,” said Lawrie. “I never meant to do that and it shows . . . it took a bad hop and it hit him just totally by accident. I don’t have any intentions of hurting anyone. I was just frustrated at the play at the time.”

Lawrie will be able to play until the hearing is held.

St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay has been placed on the 15-day disabled list as he deals with what has been described as shoulder soreness.

In the most recent five-game homestand, the Cardinals had just one regular outfielder available to play. Right fielder Carlos Beltran was out because of a minor knee injury; however, he was able to pinch hit. First baseman Lance Berkman was scratched late from the lineup, which left Matt Holliday in in left field.

“We decided to stay cautious with Carlos and give him another day,” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. “His knee has been barking.”

It was unknown as to why Berkman was scratched, but he has just come off the disabled list after recovering from an injury to his left calf. He has played two games since his return.

Jay’s injury occurred when he hit an outfield wall last month and injured his right shoulder. He has attempted to play through the injury, but has gone just 3-for-18 with one hit, which was a bunt single, in his last 15 plate appearances.

In 26 games, Jay has an average of .343 and went 1-for-4 in the loss to Chicago on Monday.

To replace Jay in the lineup, the Cardinals recalled outfielder Shane Robinson from Triple A Memphis. He spent just one day in the minors and went 3-for-4 in Monday night’s game even though he didn’t have any of his own equipment.

Robinson is going to ask utility infielder Skip Schumaker if he could borrow some of his equipment.

“I didn’t think anything would happen this soon, but it did,” said Robinson. “It’s been pretty chaotic.”

Bryce Harper, the 19-year-hold phenom for the Washington Nationals, took out his frustration in going 0-5 in a game against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night by throwing his bat against the wall of the tunnel leading to the clubhouse.

Unfortunately, the bat bounced off the wall and hit Harper in the temple above his left eye, opening a gash that would require 10 stitches to close.

The Nationals ended up winning the game 7-3.

Harper was still in the lineup for Saturday night’s game and was not feeling any ill effects from the incident.

“No problem, no headache,” said Harper. “I feel great. Ready to go.”

Initially, Nationals manager Davey Johnson thought Harper might need a couple days to recover, but the doctor that stitched him up cleared him to play.

“There wasn’t any swelling around the eye to speak of,” said Johnson. “So he can take out that anger on the opposing pitcher instead of the walls around here. He’s real lucky, real fortunate. It could have been a heck of a lot worse.”

In his hitless night against the Reds, Harper had three strikeouts. It was his groundout in the seventh inning that led to the frustrated throw of the bat. Harper did not leave the game, but returned to the field with blood flowing from the cut.

In any case, Harper’s venting did not help, as he struck out in the ninth inning.

Johnson thought that Harper was a little too anxious at the plate for the first time in his young career.

“Obviously the whole night he was overly aggressive,” said Johnson. “He hit that wall pretty hard and maybe it knocked some sense into him.”

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitcher Chris Sale convinced his manager, Ken Williams that the soreness he recently felt in his elbow was nothing out of the ordinary and had nothing to do with a significant injury.

Sale underwent an MRI, which confirmed that there was nothing wrong with the elbow, so the White Sox allowed Sale to return to the rotation on Friday, a week after being sent to the bullpen. He will start his next game on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals.

“At the end of the day, we’re all on the same side. They’ve had my best interest in mind since the day I got here. They’d rather be too cautious than not cautious enough. I got no complaints, because at the end of the day, they truly are looking out for my best interests,” said Sale. “It was just something that might have been maybe a little early, as far as making a move before getting an MRI, making sure 100 percent that I wasn’t able to do it. At the end of the day, it all came through and worked out well.”

The White Sox sent Sale to the bullpen on May 4, after becoming worried that he might be overworking his arm in his first year as a starter. He had mentioned feeling some pain in his arm to the team’s medical staff.

So far this season, in five starts, Sale is 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA. After being sent to the bullpen, though, he had one relief appearance during which he blew the save.

Sale then contacted Williams begging to get back into the rotation.

“The forcefulness in which he wanted to get back on the mound told us something. It told us the soreness wasn’t something he felt was painful enough where we had to pull the plug on him,” said Williams. “If Chris Sale believes in something he will stand up for himself and he doesn’t care who he stands up against. He has some very strong things to say to me.”

Mostly, Sale wanted to get the point across that he was just sore and not injured. He used the MRI results to back him up.

“That’s something I knew from day one. It was never pain,” Sale said. “I never had to skip a start or put on my clothes a different way. It was just sore. At the end of the day, it just was. I’m thankful for that.”

The White Sox will continue to monitor Sale as he pitches and have not ruled out the possibility that he could miss some starts in the future.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was involved in a minor traffic accident on his way to Fenway Park for Friday Night’s game.

Ortiz was at fault, but everyone involved was uninjured.

Police indicated that the other driver was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Ipswich Street and Boylston Street when Ortiz drove out of a gas station parking lot and hit the driver’s side of the car.

Ortiz was given a ticket for an improper left turn.

“I lost a little control coming out of the gas station and I hit a car, but I’m fine,” said Ortiz. “Everybody is fine.”

A witness, Tyler Bishop, said that it appeared that Oritz was speeding.

“I saw the 180 but did not see the actual impact,” said Tyler Bishop. “What happened was he was speeding, tried to slam on his brakes and spun out of control, hit a car and then turned around.”

A second witness, Kayley Bishop, said Oritz was concerned that everyone was okay.

“I think everybody is going to make mistakes,” said Kayley Bishop. “He went a little too fast and he’s not going to do it again. Now he’s going to be late for his game so he definitely won’t do it again.”

Ortiz was still in the lineup for Friday night’s game. He is currently hitting .352 and has seven home runs and 23 RBIs.
