The Major League Baseball team Minnesota Twins play their home games at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins are members of the American League's Central Division. The team's name comes from the cities Minneapolis and St. Paul, which are as known as the Twin Cities. From 1961-1981 the team played at Metropolitan Stadium and from 1982-2009 in Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Originally, the team was established in 1894 in Kansas City and joined the Western League, a Midwest minor league. In 1901 they relocated to Washington, D.C. and were one of the American League's eight original teams, as the Washington Senators and Nationals. The team enjoyed success throughout the 1920s as well as 1930s, led by their Hall of Fame players Walter Johnson, Joe Cronin, Sam Rice, Goose Goslin and Bucky Harris. In 1912, manager Clark Griffith became part of the organization. In 1920, he became the owner of the team. The franchise was owned by the Griffith family until 1984.

Minneapolis was granted an expansion team in 1960 by Major League Baseball. Calvin Griffith, owner of the Washington team, asked to give Washington D.C. the expansion and grant him permission to move to Minneapolis with his team. The league approved the request and Griffith moved his team to Minnesota following the 1960 season. Washington's new expansion team was called the Washington Senators. Before the 1972 season, they moved to Texas and became known as the Texas Rangers.

The team enjoyed fast success in Minnesota. Their sluggers Bob Allison and Harmon Killbrew were joined by Zoilo Versalles and Tony Oliva. Later pitchers Jim Perry and Jim Kaat joined along with Rod Carew, second baseman. In 1965 the Twins won the American League pennant. During the late 1980s to early 1990s the Twins enjoyed another wave of success. The team was led by Kirby Puckett, Frank Viola, Bert Blyleven and Kent Hrbek. They won the second as well as third World Series titles for the franchise. In total the team has won the World series three times (1924, 1987, 1991). Twin players have also won the American League batting championship 18 times.
