The Major League Baseball team the New York Yankees play in the East Division of the American League. The club is one of the eight charter franchises of the American League. The team was established in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland as the Baltimore Orioles. In 1903, they relocated to New York City where they were called the New York Highlanders. In 1913, they officially changed their name to the Yankees. The team moved to a new Yankee Stadium in 2009 after playing in their old park from 1923 through 2008.

The last World Series victory for the Yankees came in 2009. The franchise, as of 2011, has won the most American League pennants (40) and most World Series championships (27). The Yankees, throughout their existence, have had some of the more prominent players in the history of the Major Leagues, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle. Eleven Yankee managers and 43 Yankee players are members of Baseball's Hall of Fame. Sixteen player numbers have been retired by the team.

The Yankees have a very dedicated fan base and widespread popularity. However during George Steinbreenner's ownership, their reputation became polarized due to the heavy spending to recruit top talent. The New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox rivalry is arguably the most historic and fiercest in all of professional sports in North America. In 2002, YES Network, a dedicated television channel, was launched to support and expand Yankees media coverage.
