The Major League Baseball team Seattle Mariners are based out of Seattle, Washington and play in the American League's Western Division. The Mariners were established as a Major League Baseball franchise in 1977. Since July 1999, the Mariners have played their home games at Safeco field. From their inception in 1977 through June 1999, the Kingdome was the Mariner's home park.

The Mariners nickname originates from Seattle's prominent marine culture. The team is also referred to as “the M's,” which from 1987-1993 was featured as their primary logo. The Mariner Moose is the team's mascot and the team colors are currently Metallic Silver, Northwest Green and Navy Blue.

The Seattle Mariners did not post a winning record until 1991. Their real success occurred in 1995 during the American League Division Series when the Mariners beat the New York Yankees to win the team's first division championship. In game 5 Edgar Martinez drove in Ken Griffey, Jr. in the eleventh inning to clinch the series for the Mariners.

In 2001, Seattle won 116 games, to set a record for most American League wins for a single season as well as tie the Chicago Cubs 1906 team for most wins by a Major League team during a single season.

Despite some recent success, the Mariners, along with the Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos, are the only two Major League Baseball franchises to have never played in the World Series.
