The Major League Baseball club Washington Nationals are based out of Washington, D.C. They play in the National League's Eastern Division. In 2008 the Nationals moved into Nationals Park. The team's first three seasons were played at RFK Stadium. The Capitol Building and Washington Monument can both be seen from parts of the stadium. The Nationals got their nickname from an earlier baseball team that played in Washington, D.C.,which also went by the Senators. They are also often referred to as “the Nats.”

The club was first established in 1969 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as an expansion franchise and were originally the Montreal Expos. The Expos were the first Canadian Major League Baseball team. The home games of the Expos were played at Jarry Park Stadium before moving to Olympic Stadium in 1977.

The Expos won their first division championship in 1981 and first playoff series when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies in 5 games. They were defeated in 5 games in the NLCS by the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the 1994 strike-shortened season Montreal had MLB's best record. Following the season the team got rid of some the team's key players which angered their fans. Following the 2001 season, Major League Baseball considered revoking Montreal's team franchise in addition to either the Tampa Bay Devil Rays or Minnesota Twins. In 2002 MLB purchased the Expos. In 2005 they moved to Washington and became the Nationals. The Nationals, along with the Seattle Mariners, are the only two teams to have never made a World Series appearance.
